Real-Money Online Pokies Australia: Rules and Checks

Are real-money online pokies legal in Australia?

Contents

No. Online casinos are not permitted to offer real-money pokies to customers in Australia. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) identifies online casinos and slots as prohibited online gambling services and says prohibited services must not be offered to customers in Australia or advertised in Australia. This is a provider/service rule, not a conclusion that every individual player's participation is a crime—or that participation is universally lawful. See ACMA's overview of the Interactive Gambling Act.

Here, “pokies” is the informal Australian term for slot-style games, not poker card games. This guide explains the regulatory distinction, how to check a provider's listing and where to seek help. It is general information, not legal advice.

What does the law say about providers and players?

Section 15 of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (IGA) addresses providing a prohibited interactive gambling service; its provider-focused wording should not be turned into a blanket statement about individual player liability. The official excerpt below comes from the Federal Register compilation dated 14 October 2024.

This image illustrates the statutory text in that dated compilation. It is not ACMA's live register, a current consolidated-law guarantee or a legal conclusion about an individual's circumstances. For ACMA's explanation of prohibited services, use its IGA overview, rather than treating this older excerpt as current regulator guidance.

How do you check a provider on ACMA's register?

Open ACMA's live Register of licensed interactive gambling providers and compare the provider's exact name and domain with the listed details. ACMA says an online wagering service must be listed to operate; this check does not establish permission to offer online casino pokies. Use the live ACMA register, because its entries can change.

  1. Open the register page using the link above.
  2. Use your browser's Find function to search for the provider's exact trading name.
  3. Search again for the domain of the website you are checking. A similar brand name is not enough.
  4. Compare the register's four fields: Trading name, Licence holder, URL and Licensing authority.
  5. Check that the trading name, legal licence holder and website address match the provider you mean to verify.

If the provider is absent, the domain differs or the details are unclear, do not treat it as approved. Consult ACMA's protection and complaint guidance rather than relying on a website's own licensing claim.

A matching entry supports a limited listing-status check for the specified provider and service. It does not authorise every product sold under the same brand, and it does not override ACMA's prohibition on online casino services.

Do a foreign licence or register entry prove safety or payouts?

No. A foreign licence is not an Australian register entry, and an ACMA register entry is not certification of game fairness, return to player (RTP), payments or withdrawals. The ACMA register identifies provider and licensing details; it does not provide those game or payout assurances.

Keep three questions separate:

  • Listing status: Does the specified provider and service match the live register?
  • Product permission: Is the particular service permitted? A wagering listing does not authorise online casino pokies.
  • Game and payment claims: Are claims about fairness, RTP or payouts independently established? The register does not answer this.

A licence logo, a listed wagering business or a claimed RTP should therefore not be presented as proof that an online casino is authorised for Australians or that funds will be paid.

What risks does ACMA identify?

ACMA warns that using illegal gambling operators can expose people to difficulty recovering winnings or funds, website closure or domain changes, unauthorised bank deductions, and loss of access through internet service provider blocking. These are regulator-identified risks, not a claim that every user experiences every outcome. See ACMA's protection guidance and its blocked gambling websites overview.

A working website is not evidence of approval. Likewise, a changed domain does not resolve the original provider's regulatory status or establish that funds are recoverable.

What does “PayID pokies” mean in the scam warning?

The AUSTRAC/Fintel Alliance warning describes a specific scam pattern involving the promotion of, and referrals to, unregulated websites advertised as “PayID pokies”, with payments directed to nominated recipient accounts that change—not PayID use generally. Its August 2025 fact sheet describes a lack of guarantees and reports of denied winnings or funds. See the AUSTRAC/Fintel Alliance fact sheet.

The fact sheet says participation on the websites it describes is not illegal, while strongly advising against using them. That statement is limited to the specified scam context: it is not a blanket legal opinion on every online casino or every player's conduct. Nor does the warning mean that all PayID transactions are fraudulent.

What can you do after losing funds or experiencing harm?

You can report the operator to ACMA and seek financial, legal or gambling support, but reporting does not guarantee recovery. ACMA accepts complaints without requiring your name and suggests independent legal advice, the ACCC and the relevant licensing authority as possible avenues for people seeking to recover money. See ACMA's complaint and recovery guidance.

For losses connected with the scam pattern described above, the AUSTRAC/Fintel Alliance fact sheet suggests contacting your bank, a financial counsellor, the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007, or community police. These are support and reporting options, not promises of reimbursement.

For gambling-related harm, ACMA lists the National Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 and free, 24/7 Gambling Help Online support, including chat and email. ACMA also describes BetStop — National Self-Exclusion Register as covering Australian-licensed online and phone wagering. Do not assume this self-exclusion scheme covers offshore casinos or all gambling. See ACMA's support information and BetStop scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Being accessible is not evidence of approval. ACMA's blocked-site list and provider register serve different purposes. Check the live register for the specified provider and service: https://www.acma.gov.au/check-if-gambling-operator-legal

Section 15 of the Interactive Gambling Act, in the Federal Register compilation dated 14 October 2024, concerns providers offering prohibited services to customers in Australia; it does not establish an offence merely for an individual playing. That does not mean participation is universally lawful. The player-liability statement in the August 2025 AUSTRAC/Fintel Alliance warning is limited to the sites described in that warning and should not be extended to all sites or circumstances. This is general information, not individual legal advice.

Yes. ACMA says it accepts complaints without requiring your name. A complaint does not guarantee that funds will be recovered. See https://www.acma.gov.au/protect-yourself-illegal-gambling-operators

Do not assume it does. ACMA describes BetStop — National Self-Exclusion Register as covering Australian-licensed online and phone wagering, not all offshore casinos or all gambling: https://www.acma.gov.au/about-interactive-gambling-act
