Buffalo Link is an Aristocrat land-based slot machine with a buffalo-head progress meter that triggers a feature before the counter reaches 1800. That ceiling does not guarantee a jackpot or profit: buffalo heads advance the meter, while full buffalo-body symbols have a separate role in Hold and Spin and prize awards.
The official Aristocrat overview describes the counter, Hold and Spin, and Free Games. The detailed rules below also draw on photographed Aristocrat help screens hosted by Wizard of Odds—not our own playtesting. The photographed rules set carries a 2021 copyright notice; its photo date and machine build are unspecified. Treat those details as evidence for the documented configuration, not every Buffalo Link machine.
Stakes and 1024 Ways to Win
Your cash stake is the number of credits bet multiplied by the denomination—the cash value of one credit. The documented configuration has a minimum bet of 100 credits, all reels active, and a 5×4 grid with 1024 ways to win.
These are ways to win, not paylines: 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 1024 potential position combinations. A winning combination uses one symbol per reel, and coinciding wins are added together. These conditions appear on the general rules screen.
| Credits bet | Denomination | Cash stake |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | USD 0.01 | USD 1 |
| 200 | USD 0.02 | USD 4 |
These calculations are exact: 100 × 0.01 = USD 1 and 200 × 0.02 = USD 4. Available denominations and bet options depend on the machine. Do not apply a 40-credit rule from another Buffalo game here. The slot denomination guide explains the distinction between credit value and total stake.
What the Counter Before 1800 Means
The counter measures buffalo heads, not spins: the feature must trigger strictly before the counter reaches 1800, not at that number. This must-hit ceiling guarantees a feature before the limit, not a cash payout, profit or a particular award.
According to the photographed counter rules:
- The starting count is 100.
- Each buffalo head adds 1, including heads appearing during bonuses.
- Each denomination and bet multiplier combination has its own separate count.
- The display shows only the counter for the current settings.
- The counter resets after the meter-awarded Free Feature.
A naturally triggered Hold and Spin does not itself reset the counter, as the Wizard of Odds analysis explains. The requirement that the feature occur before 1800 also appears in the official Aristocrat overview.
Example: A Counter Reading of 1650
1800 − 1650 = 150 is the numerical gap to the ceiling in buffalo heads, not 150 remaining spins. The feature can start sooner, and the available sources do not disclose the trigger-point distribution or the rate at which heads appear.
The full numerical span from the starting value to the ceiling is 1800 − 100 = 1700 heads. Neither 150 nor 1700 can be converted into a guaranteed spin count, cash cost or profit. Without head probabilities and payout data, such a projection cannot be reproduced.

How the Three Bonus Routes Differ
Naturally triggered Hold and Spin and the meter-awarded feature have different entry conditions. The natural trigger uses full buffalo-body symbols; the buffalo-head counter instead awards a feature that randomly selects Free Games or Hold and Spin.
| Bonus route | Trigger | Starting conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Hold and Spin | 8–19 full buffalo-body symbols appear | Those symbols are held on entry; three respins are awarded |
| Meter-awarded Free Games | The meter feature randomly selects Free Games | The starting number of free spins is randomly chosen from 8, 15 or 20 |
| Meter-awarded Hold and Spin | The meter feature randomly selects Hold and Spin | The triggering heads are not held; three spins are awarded |
In naturally triggered Hold and Spin, new buffalo-body symbols lock in place and reset the remaining respins to three. The feature ends when no respins remain or 20 bodies have been collected. Collected awards are paid at the end; ordinary paytable wins are not awarded inside this feature.
In meter-awarded Hold and Spin, new bodies also lock and reset the remaining spins to three. If no body symbols appear during the first three spins, the feature retriggers. This is not equivalent to entering with eight symbols already held.
For Free Games, the official overview describes wilds with 2× or 3× multipliers and possible retriggers.

Which Jackpots and Awards Are Documented?
The published rules include Grand, Major, Minor and Mini, but their cash amounts must not be generalized to every Buffalo Link machine. Denomination converts credits into money, while current progressive amounts must be checked on the specific machine.
| Award | Documented rule | Configuration limit |
|---|---|---|
| Mini | 2000 credits in the documented configuration | USD 20 at a 0.01 denomination; USD 40 at a 0.02 denomination |
| Minor | 10000 credits in the documented configuration | USD 100 at a 0.01 denomination; USD 200 at a 0.02 denomination |
| Major | A Major-marked body pays at the end of Hold and Spin; it also pays when 20 bodies, including Major, appear in the base game or Free Games | Check the current progressive amount on the machine |
| Grand | Awarded when 20 buffalo body symbols appear together in a paid spin or a Free Game, or when 20 body symbols have been collected by the end of Hold and Spin | No universal starting amount or cap is established |
The Mini and Minor values, along with body awards consisting of jackpots or bet multipliers, appear on the buffalo-symbol rules screen. For example, 2000 × 0.01 = USD 20 is an exact credit conversion, not an estimate of winning probability. That screen also states that body-prize probabilities change with the bet.
The stand-alone progressive rules describe Major. In this version, increasing the wager proportionally increases the probability of Major, but does not reveal that probability or prove that a higher stake is favorable. The Grand condition is described in the official overview.
RTP, Volatility and Advantage-Play Limits
No verified exact RTP has been established for this configuration, and a high counter alone does not prove that play is profitable. The official overview does not publish an exact full-game RTP, and the available rules do not supply the probabilities needed for a reproducible expected-value calculation.
Return to player, or RTP, is the theoretical share of total wagers returned over the long run. It is not a hit rate or a promised return for your session. Volatility describes how results fluctuate; a verified numerical volatility measure for this configuration is not available here. See the RTP versus volatility guide for the conceptual distinction.
The counter is nevertheless a genuine persistent state, not merely decoration. It would be incorrect to say that conditions are identical at every meter value. Nominal full-game RTP and the expected return from a particular counter state are different questions; the latter remains unknown without a probability model.
Wizard of Odds recommends entry at 1300–1450 and separately names 1375, citing undisclosed RTP evidence. That is the author's unverified recommendation, not a profitable entry point validated by us. The published data are insufficient to reproduce the expected-profit calculation.
What to Check Before a Paid Spin
Check the exact title, cash stake and counter for your chosen settings, then set affordable loss and time limits. Do not expand your budget to reach a feature or recover earlier losses.
- Confirm that the machine is labeled Buffalo Link by Aristocrat.
- Find the denomination and credits bet, then calculate the cash stake.
- Inspect the counter at your intended denomination and bet multiplier. A count shown under another setting does not apply.
- Read the bonus rules in the help screen and check the current jackpot amounts.
- Decide how much you can afford to lose and when you will stop. Stop when either limit is reached.
Do not press unfamiliar buttons while looking for help. The control rules say that the bottom-row buttons and the large button immediately start play. Ask venue staff if you are unsure. Local gambling-age and jurisdiction rules apply.

How to Calculate Expected Loss
The calculator compares expected costs at an RTP you enter; it does not discover Buffalo Link's unknown RTP or evaluate a particular counter state. For this example, assume a hypothetical 95% RTP, a USD 1 stake and 200 paid spins.
Open the expected-loss calculator with the example inputs, then check the settings:
- Enter 95 in the RTP field.
- Enter 1 in the bet field.
- Select By spins.
- Enter 200 in Number of Spins.
Local calculator interface with 95% RTP, a USD 1 bet and 200 spins
Local interface capture using the hypothetical example inputs. It does not verify the production interface or establish Buffalo Link's RTP.
Under these assumptions, total wagered is USD 200, expected loss is USD 10 and expected return is USD 190. The arithmetic is:
- Total wagered: 1 × 200 = USD 200.
- House edge: 100% − 95% = 5%.
- Expected loss: 200 × (1 − 95 / 100) = USD 10.
- Expected return: 200 − 10 = USD 190.
Read the result as a mathematical expectation, not a session forecast. House Edge is the share of wagers represented by the theoretical casino advantage. Any rating badge visible in the screenshot is not our endorsement of the game.

How Different RTP Inputs Change the Result
A lower entered RTP produces a higher expected loss at the same total wagered. All three RTP values below are hypothetical: none is verified as Buffalo Link's RTP.
| Hypothetical RTP | Total wagered | Expected loss | Expected return |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90% | USD 200 | USD 20 | USD 180 |
| 95% | USD 200 | USD 10 | USD 190 |
| 96% | USD 200 | USD 8 | USD 192 |
The formula is total wagered × (1 − RTP / 100). No rounding is needed in these examples. They do not calculate a required bankroll, the chance of profit or the cost of reaching a feature.
If you use full-game RTP, bonus awards are already included: do not add their return again. Free spins do not create additional paid turnover. Evaluating the meter state requires a separate probability-based calculation that these inputs cannot provide.
How to Find the Exact Buffalo Link Game
Search for Buffalo Link together with Aristocrat, and verify the actual title and rules. Buffalo alone can refer to other games, while an unqualified Buffalo Link search can also lead to unrelated LinkStation storage products.
Buffalo Link is not Lightning Buffalo Link, Buffalo Gold or Greentube's Diamond Link: Mighty Buffalo. Those are separate titles with their own rules; do not transfer counter or bonus conditions between them. The broader Buffalo slot guide helps distinguish games in the family.
A game locator is accessible from the official Buffalo Link product page. Inventory can change, so confirm availability with the venue before traveling.
We have not verified a real-money online or demo version with an identical configuration. That does not mean one cannot exist anywhere: a matching name alone does not establish matching rules, counter behavior or RTP. Compare the provider, help screen and settings rather than relying on an advertising card.
Frequently Asked Questions
In the cited rules, a bought game means a paid spin, not a bonus purchased through a separate button. These sources do not confirm a manual bonus-buy feature.
The photographed rules describe scattered gold coins as winning symbols whose awards are multiplied by the total credits bet. They do not establish a link between a coin count and a free-spin trigger.
The photographed rules say that touching CREDIT, BET or WIN toggles the display between credits and currency. The bottom-row buttons and the large button immediately start play, so ask venue staff for help if you are unsure which control to use.
